PRICING ANALYSIS -- SNAPSHOT
230 products where the "special" costs more than the old price.
In September 2024, the ACCC filed Federal Court proceedings against both Coles and Woolworths for illusory discount pricing. In May 2026, the Court found Coles had misled consumers. We tracked 76,000+ products across 112 weeks and compared today's "special" prices to what each product actually cost 6-18 months ago. These 230 products are on special right now -- but the sale price is higher than what you were paying before the price was raised.

How we detected it
A product qualifies when all three conditions are met:
- The product is currently marked "on special" by the retailer
- The "special" price is still 5%+ higher than the most common price from 6-18 months ago
- The shelf price (was-price) has been raised above the special price, creating the appearance of a discount
This is the same pattern the ACCC identified in their Federal Court case against both retailers. We use the most common historical price (statistical mode) over a 52-week baseline window, requiring at least 12 weeks of data, ensuring the comparison reflects what consumers actually paid.

The pattern
How a price rise is disguised as a discount.
The tag says 30% off. The "special" price of $15.40 is 62% more than the $9.50 this product cost for 16 straight weeks before the shelf price was raised.
This pattern is based on real Coles sunscreen data -- one of 230 products currently showing this behaviour across Coles and Woolworths.
